There are a handful of requirements that must be met in order to get a REAL ID, whether the REAL ID you are getting is a driver’s license or a passport. The first one being that you must have several documents and show certain information about yourself. This includes:
Your birth certificate and marriage certificate if married.
Your social security number and/or another form of documentation showing your status as a legal resident of the U.S.
A photo-ID that has your full legal name and date of birth.
At least two documents that show that you live where you claim to.
In order to meet the last of those qualifications it is necessary to have something like a light bill or other piece of mail that is addressed to you and that has your name on it and proves where you live. Your social security number does not need to be your actual SS card but can also be a pay stub, W-2 form, or anything else that has your SS number as well as your name on it. Your SS number will be verified electronically to make sure that it matches your name.
Birth certificates are also electronically verified and, when all of this is complete, all these documents will be photocopied and stored in a database. The database used by REAL IDs is a state-wide one which contains all the information that is written on your ID card.
